Many years ago, a music theatre piece of mine was well received and subsequently taken on tour. The music was recorded and an artist friend complained about one of the instrumentalists sounding ‘too well behaved’.

At that point in my journey as an artist, it was important for me to understand and know what ‘good behaviour’ entailed. so I brushed my friend’s observation aside.

Others upbraided me for taking a ‘retrograde step’ (sic), but I stuck to my path, undeterred.

Nowadays, ‘good behaviour’ in performance is much more of a currency amongst young folks of my heritage than it was when I was young.

Isn’t such behaviour just one aspect of a performing artist’s expressive range?
