We are currently living through a moment in time when gatekeepers are being asked to account for themselves. Just the same as in many other instances, this development has its pros and cons.

Who are the folks asking for accountability? What are their motives? Is it truly possible to use such tactics as a means of thought policing? Are there other issues at play, such as business considerations?

A small group can invest energy and resources in diminishing a brand, with the ulterior motive of shaking things up, to suit their own interests. If political parties and governments can be subverted with success, it should be a doddle to take on cultural institutions.

On the other hand, it is clear that decision making in some of these organisations needs to be opened up to a more diverse range of social groups.

Tales of hostile takeovers and power grabs are as old as the hills, in any case.
