Was there ever a time when things were more certain for most human beings than they are today? Science and technology has produced a vast range of benefits that were not available to previous generations, but sometimes these new developments function as catalysts for shifts in the group dynamics of cultures, so we find ourselves grappling with questions that didn’t occur to us in the past.

In an ideal world, it would be nice to feel that one could sometimes relax into a comfort zone and not feel anxious about impending events, but perhaps this elusive safe space is only attainable in our dreams.

For better or worse, the fact that a person is born into wealth or with any other set of a privileges doesn’t guarantee that he or she will find fulfilment or success. Is it is possible that documentation of human existence (which can only ever be subjective) is responsible for a lot of our collective and individual hang ups?

We can all tell our own stories now. We can even document them for posterity. No one has to be dependent on being recognised by others or validated for being alive. This realisation is easy for youngsters to understand. Those of us who were born into the old ways of seeing and doing things are the ones who have the most work to do in changing our perceptions.

In the past, human achievement was measured by the degree of access each person was given to the glare of attention from others. Things have moved on. Are we all aware of this?
