Someone regarded as a sage of the age said “Africa doesn’t need strongmen. It needs strong institutions”.
On the surface, this statement could be regarded as progressive. When one starts to unpick what it could mean, many issues arise.
Strength manifests itself in a range of forms. One can be physically, mentally, intellectually or emotional strong, for example.
The speaker in question was referring to autocratic leaders who install themselves as “presidents for life”, warlords and others who could be described as “strongmen”.
In actual fact, Africa needs Africans to be as strong in as many ways as possible. The continent also needs strong institutions.
