I once knew a capricious driving instructor who loved talking about straddling – a useful descriptive term for finding the middle ground in situations.
Some folks protest too much about being urbane and refined, by claiming to be unaware of roots, customs and traditions. They allow themselves to freeze in affectedly ‘childlike’ ignorance.
True bon viveurs and sophisticates are likely to be multilingual and sure footed in negotiating their ways through several cultural milieus.
Self acceptance doesn’t necessarily lead on to living one’s life on other people’s terms.
Isn’t straddling somehow linked to taking control of a situation and finding a personal approach to dealing with things?
