Approaching a flowing stream, I noticed some stepping stones dotted across it. Here was a fine chance to cross over to the other side.
So far, so straightforward. When I reached the edge of the stream, one of the stones piped up and said to me ‘Hello! Can we be friends?’
Taken aback by such an unusual occurrence, I responded – ‘Yes, how do you do?’
‘Pretty good, thank you’, the stepping stone said. ‘Where are you off to?’
‘The other side of the stream’ I replied, knowing in my heart of hearts that I couldn’t step on a speaking stone.
