I meet a person frequently in my line of work. We are well disposed towards each other. We smile a lot, share anecdotes and jokes. Sometimes we even meet up for a drink. In describing this person to someone else, how should I label our involvement?

I believe I know what friendship feels like. I feel it requires the presence of an element of mutual dependability and intimacy. Getting along very well with another person isn’t necessarily the same experience.

It is possible that I have this notion because of the line of work I’m in. Any practice that scrutinises the quality of relationships and group dynamics is likely to develop a heightened consciousness of varying degrees of closeness.

Mindfulness about personal space and boundaries is an important factor to be considered in human interaction. One shouldn’t take anything for granted.

Am I a cold fish? Who knows? The jury is still out.
