I learnt from a sculptor that an artist should use his or her talent to go with the flow of nature. One can look at a piece of material and see possibilities, but one’s intention should be to enhance the shapes and forms that have already been provided, in order to make new work.
This attitude can also be applied to our talents and the way we nurture them.
It has taken me decades to understand that creative energy works best when it is aligned with appropriate outlets.
This might seem like a banal realisation, easy to state, but it takes practical engagement to feel the insight from within, for some of us.
Lessons are sometimes learnt through tedious or painful processes. I might have made life too complicated for some folks I’ve met along the way. I aim to do better from now on.
