Ambling through a back street, not far from home, I came across a matriarch of a certain age in a wheelchair, sitting in the sun.

As I got closer to the spot where she sat, she beckoned to me to come hither, with a bony finger.

I was wary about getting too close, as I had no idea what she had in store for me, but she simply wanted to say something.

‘They’ve put me on the wrong side of the road’, she said. ‘I should be over there, next to them’. Then she pointed at the wheelie bins across the road.

We both roared with laughter. I told her I disagreed with her, but admired her sense of humour, and continued on my way.
