‘Stop gripping!’ My singing teacher used to say in the early days of my learning from her. I understood the instruction intellectually, but it took a while before I knew the feeling of loosening up in my body.

Years of digging my heels in and struggling for the freedom to follow my muse had seeped into my consciousness and physicality.

Alexander Technique was useful as a starting point in my process of changing habits, but Pilates was even more effective for me, because of the awareness of my pelvic floor muscles and the conscious breathing with each movement.

In holistic terms, it has taken even longer to let go of notions of who I am and the nature of my calling.

Boundaries are important, but so is the maintenance of an overview regarding one’s potential.
