If it is true that ‘birds of a feather flock together’, then it makes sense that flock members will develop group habits, for better or worse.
For some of the time, the flock might face outsiders. Duplicitous antics could be weaponised against others, for example.
In cases where the behavioural patterns are deeply engrained, flock members are wont to do these things unconsciously.
So, the weapon that was once effective against an outsider is then used on a fellow member.
It is reasonable to feel flushes of schadenfreude when these moments become apparent?
