For many years I have engaged with the canon of Western Art Music composers – both as a performer and as an audience member. I’ve noted that many of them have drawn inspiration from the mythical worlds of their forebears, regardless of whether these narratives fit in snugly within the boundaries of Judeo-Christian values or not.
On the other hand, I have also noticed that artists of my own direct heritage are ambivalent about doing the same thing with the narratives handed down by our ancestors. The intervention of Abrahamic belief systems in African education probably has a lot to do with this.
